The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) was founded in Paris in 1928. ICOLD membership currently comprises of 92 countries, with 10000 individual members. Members are from Consulting Engineering companies, Contractors, Environmental organizations, Researchers, Academics, Governments, Financial Institutions, etc. ICOLD leads the profession in setting guidelines to ensure that dams are built safely, economically, and in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

The African Club of ICOLD was established in 2012. Currently 22 National Committees from Africa are part of the African Club. The key objective of the African Club is to facilitate interchange of knowledge and experience between countries with common interests and environments. The Club seeks to enhance access to ICOLD knowledge and experience by those who may not otherwise have access to the Commission’s events.

Objectives of ICOLD African Club

To promote the professional training and education of individuals, including staff exchanges between organisations and countries, to help create up-to-date knowledge and skills on all aspects associated with dams.

To encourage individuals, particularly younger people, with skills and interests in engineering, science and environmental matters associated with dams to become active members of ICOLD and the ARC.

To encourage the participation of non-ICOLD countries and engineering, scientific, environmental as well as business organisations in the activities of ICOLD and the ARC.

To support the holding of regional conferences and seminars on a wide range of topics associated with dams.

To encourage exchange of information and experiences amongst ARC members on all aspects on dams.

To promote leading practice in regard to planning, funding, investigation, design, construction, operation, maintenance, safety review, environmental sustainability and social equity associated with dams.

To support the policies and activities of ICOLD at a regional level.
